WATTS EXHIBIT
Features works from Charles Dickson, Cynthia White, Dale Brockman Davis, David Hammons, John Outterbridge, John Riddle, Michael Massenburg, Noah Purifoy, Timothy Washington and curated by Stan Sanders.
It was during this high-point in the American art landscape, the highest point since the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930’s, that Sanders began his own collection of contemporary Black art, beginning as a young lawyer bartering his professional services for works of art from the local artists, all struggling but clearly on the verge of making profound impacts on 20th Century American culture. Fifty years later this collection, with others, is a trail-blazing genre included in permanent collections of museums worldwide. Sanders wrote about this cultural awakening among urban U. S. Blacks in 1968 in an article in Black Voices’ entitled “I’ll Never Escape The Ghetto”. Sanders is active in Los Angeles politics. For 14 years, he was Mayor Tom Bradley’s president of the City Recreation and Parks Commission where he led the effort to form the Watts Towers Art Center that was later transferred to the jurisdiction of the Cultural Affairs Department. He served in 1993 as co-chairman of the Mayor’s Committee on Art and Culture in Los Angeles, out of which grew the Cultural Affairs Department and a significant expansion of the City Municipal Arts Department. In 1993 he was himself a candidate for Mayor.
Sanders was part of a small group of Mayor Bradley supporters who put together the proposal in 1973 to the L. A. Community Redevelopment Agency for what became the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
A corporate lawyer, Sanders formed the first Black corporate law firm in California in 1973, with offices directly across from LACMA that housed the first gallery space for African Art on Wilshire Boulevard. The first contributions of contemporary Black art to the permanent collection at LACMA were donated by the Sanders & Tisdale law firm.

SUNSET SESSION
Possibly the last public Sunset Session of the year. Keep in mind, the more ‘unique’ the weather the better the sunset. If interested in attending in-person, save your seat/ticket soon. This time of year the sun sets directly in front of Venice Beach and it also happens to be the best season for uniquely beautiful sunsets. So we host a select gathering at a great vantage to enjoy a remarkable sunset.
No food, no drinks, but according to those who come ‘enlightenment, a moment to reflect and move forward with more clarity, a profound time – with nature’.
Expect a comfortable and spectacular view of the sunset along with real-time, contemporary score of therapeutic, sublime sounds to put you in the best headspace. It’s a moment to experience a sunset, relax, enlighten, and appreciate. There will only be a couple more of these events this year because the sun is beginning to head north on the coast and will soon be setting in front of Malibu and Calabasas areas, rather than Venice. They’ve been running OVER CAPACITY, so if you want to go save your seat using this EventBrite system. If you don’t want to pay, no prob, there’s always a way to be of help in exchange {contact them}. But please do not just show up. It will be $15 at the door and no guarantee of a seat, space, or entry without ticket.
Some call the event a meditation, some call it art and some nature.

TOM KRUMPAK’S EXHIBIT
Lora Schlesinger Gallery is pleased to announce Tom Krumpak’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is on view through January 23, 2016. Krumpak’s meticulous abstract paintings are an exploration of color and shape, methodically arranged to produce potent color field abstractions that pack a visual punch.
The exhibition titled in Haiku form, Bamboo tall, blue sky, a painted abstract picture, inside wooden room is comprised of a body of work, inspired by the relationship between Mid-20th-Century Modern architectural design and traditional Japanese Shoji screened dwellings found in the United States and Japan. Built in a similar style, the artist considers his studio to be an “artistic pictorial construction site” providing the necessary visual elements that formulate and inform his work. Krumpak makes tracings of random patterns found on paint palettes, marks and splashes left on work tables or on his own clothing, momentary stacks of paint cans and books, piles of sea shells or collected rocks, scattered architectural renderings, historical photos and drawings of the surrounding landscape. He intermixes them with bits of personal history such as text, poetry, music lyrics and anything that captures place, the past and the present. The result is a body of work that is an obsessive exploration of place and being, time and space.
Tom Krumpak has exhibited internationally since 1976. He earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from California State University Long Beach and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the San Francisco Art institute. He has been a professor of drawing and painting at California State University Long Beach since 1983.
