“DR. STRANGELOVE”/”THE KILLING” – CENTENNIAL SALUTE TO STERLING HAYDEN SERIES! “DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB” SCREENING
Kubrick’s tough-as-nails heist film about a robbery at a racetrack features an incredible rogue’s gallery of great character actors, including Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Elisha Cook Jr., Marie Windsor and Timothy Carey. One of the most entertaining crime films ever made, propelled by Kubrick’s no-nonsense approach and screenwriter Jim Thompson’s biting, chiseled-in-stone dialogue.
Learn more about the series here: http://bit.ly/1LQG9sF
Screening formats: DCP (DR. STRANGELOVE), 35mm (THE KILLING)
A gallery of unforgettable comic grotesques, including Sterling Hayden’s fluoride-hating general, George C. Scott’s oversexed Commie killer, and the brilliant Peter Sellers as the befuddled U.S. president, as well as the veddy-British commander Mandrake and the maniacal Dr. Strangelove. Slim Pickens (BLAZING SADDLES) plummets his way into comedic history. “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room.”

“MILDRED PIERCE” SCREENING AND TO LIVE AND DINE IN L.A. DISCUSSION
The Library Foundation of Los Angeles will present illustrated presentation on Los Angeles Art Deco era restaurant menus from the Los Angeles Public Library’s collection by author Josh Kun (http://live-and-dine.lfla.org/), who will also sign his book, To Live and Dine in L.A. (Angel City Press: www.angelcitypress.com), afterward. During the program, Kun – a professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism – will use menus from the Los Angeles Public Library’s collection to discuss the rich history of food and restaurants in Los Angeles, with a particular focus on women and the Art Deco era. Kun will be joined by renowned James Beard Award winning chef, restaurateur and author, Sherry Yard who will speak a bit on the history of pastries in Los Angeles.
Followed by a screening of MILDRED PIERCE (1945), the story of a housewife’s rise in the restaurant business in Los Angeles and her demanding daughter who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Fried chicken and pie (just like Mildred used to make) will be for sale starting at 12;30pm at the Egyptian Theatre. Diners will be able to choose from crispy light or dark meat fried chicken and a choice of mashed potatoes or mac ‘n cheese from Alex Peyton Events and an assortment of pies from the Nickel Diner! Sodas, lemonade and of course, milk will also be sold. More information coming soon!
Followed by:
MILDRED PIERCE (35mm print!)
1945, Warner Bros., 111 min, USA, Dir: Michael Curtiz
“Mildred had more to offer in a glance, than most woman give in a lifetime.”
Joan Crawford gives her signature performance (an Oscar winner!) as James M. Cain’s ultimate maternal martyr, in thrall to her own femme fatale daughter, Veda (a deliciously venal Ann Blyth). After Mildred divorces her cheating husband, she turns her pie baking skills into what ultimately becomes a successful restaurant chain – all the while, working to give her demanding, selfish daughter, the best of everything – but even that isn’t enough for Veda! The twisted combination of high-strung soap opera and hard-edged pulp produced what may be the greatest Hollywood melodrama of all time.
“Loving her was like shaking hands with the devil.”

“JOURNEY THIS” ONE-WOMAN SHOW STARRING CHERAY O’NEAL
This fantastic one-woman show starts NAACP Image Award winner Cheray O’Neal. This unique play takes the audience down a humorous soul searching odyssey to forgiveness, and raises the question “is happiness a choice or a by-product?” After her last living relative dies, Journey is faced with a choice; suffer or forgive. O’Neal’s writing and thespian skills are stellar in this well-paced and developed play. Her sold out shows have been captivating audiences while they experience the journeys of the many characters she plays. “Journey This” is inspiring and controversial with an uplifting and daringly humorous message of female empowerment. O’Neal portrays both male and female characters ranging for ages 6 to 80 flawlessly. Such characters include a little girl from the 1950s, a 17 year old boy from the streets, an 80 year old socialite, to an erotic poet.
Hailing from New York, Cheray O’Neal’s credits cross a diverse spectrum from film to the stage. Not only is she a published author, her acting has granted opportunities in the films “H4” produced by Harry Lennix (“Blacklist”), “Honesty” by Mark Pellington (“Blindspot”), and is a proud member of The Labyrinth Theater Company of New York. She’s worked with actors Philip Seymour Hoffman, Judy Reyes, David Zayas, and Loretta Devine, as well as singers Macy Gray and Adam Lambert.
The show is associate produced by visual effects master Rick Alonso (“Scandal”), directed by Lenore Thomas Douglas (“Princess Diaries”), and Tovaris Wilson, choreographer of “America’s Got Talent”. Some of the proceeds will be donated to Playforpink.org and Stoller Filer Planned Parenthood of Watts.
