SAMBA SOCIETY & MOFORRO AT LEVITT PAVILION PASADENA
Samba Society is THRILLED to be returning to the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena stage! Our show there three years ago was an epic event with us appearing for the first and only time as a 15-piece big band. This year we return with our sister band MôForró together on one stage for an unforgettable night of Brazilian music.
Although there are hundreds of regional genres through the country, Brazilian Popular Music is largely derived from two major fundamental streams that have influenced generations of artists and musicians for the past century: SAMBA and FORRÓ. L.A.’s two premier bands representing these quintessential Brazilian genres, Samba Society and MôForró, will share the stage in an unprecedented concert, blurring the lines between bands, genres, musicians and audience.
Be sure and get there early to secure a good place on the lawn! Bring the family, a picnic basket, and your dancing shoes!
They have an amazing lineup of musicians and special guests!
ABOUT THE BANDS:
SAMBA SOCIETY plays deep “roots” samba. A collective of musicians from the Brazilian community of So. Cal. under the artistic direction of Beto González, Samba Society is primarily dedicated to the partido alto and samba de terreiro popularized by Rio’s “Old Guard” of urban samba. The group’s repertoire features renditions of vintage sambas reminiscent of classic recordings from the 1970s.
MôForró plays triangle-driven, hip-swiveling dance music in the traditional, rootsy, “pé de serra” style of forró. A music that was born out of the countryside of the dry Northeast, forró is now one of the most popular rhythms to come from Brazil. Since forming in late 2012, MôForró–along with the Forró in L.A. collective–has been integral to the growing popularity of forró as a dance-music genre throughout Southern California.

KAT HUTTER & ROGER LEE: ANOTHER CALIFORNIA DAY
In the mixed-media installation created for the PMCAs Project Room, painter Kat Hutter and ceramicist Roger Lee present a deconstructed and abstracted vision of the quintessential California landscape. Inspired by the rugged, scenic beauty of the state, the unprecedented collaboration is an intersection of the artists independent practices, their photographic explorations of California, and their combined endeavor K&R Ceramics. Kat Hutter and Roger Lee: Another California Day is an uncharted, distinctive combination of media that considers the intersections of natural and created environments, beauty and the work that makes it possible.
