CITY BEATS PRESENTS VERY BE CAREFUL AND DJ SLOEPOKE
A fresh addition to the FIGat7th concert schedule, the monthly City Beats shows are curated by KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez and provide a colorful, sonic snapshot of up-and-coming musicians.
Very Be Careful/Guest DJ: Sloepoke
Unlike other bands who take the mixologist approach to music (a shot of funk, a dash of soul, a twist of jazz, shaken and poured over rock), Very Be Careful likes their Colombian vallenato sound straight up, no chaser. But if the East LA quintet, led by brothers Arturo and Ricardo Guzman does only one thing, they do that one thing very well. So well that the band has played in just about every imaginable circumstance, from small clubs to massive festivals. It’s dance music–sweaty, slinky, and a little sad at the edges; music meant to get your heart moving as well as your feet. Their traditional songs have a modern edge, a combination described by The Independent of London as “Top-grade…a South American alternative to James Brown’s funk.”
When DJ Sloepoke takes his place at the turntables, he has no agenda other than rocking the house. And with his eclectic tastes and record collection, he can rock just about any house in town. He can effortlessly segue from salsa to soul, dancehall to dub, cumbia to club stormers. It’s a talent that earned him residencies at some of LA’s hottest rooms: Rootdown, Little Temple, the Motown on Mondays sessions at the Federal Bar in Long Beach.

MAKING LA: EMBRACE THE LAKE TOUR
In case you hadn’t noticed, for the last year the Silver Lake Reservoirs have been bone dry-and not because of the drought. Part of a long-standing plan to take both reservoirs offline so that they no longer store drinking water for LA, the construction process has left many people confused about the future of, well, Silver Lake. LADWP, whose ongoing work has turned the reservoirs into a scene straight out of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, has recently announced plans to refill both reservoirs in the most environmentally friendly way possible with groundwater pumped in from existing wells starting in May 2017. But that’s just the beginning of the potential for change…
Join on Sunday, October 23rd as they come together with Silver Lake Forward for a series of walks around the reservoir to celebrate this important community resource. The first tour at 10:00am will focus on the future of Silver Lake, the second tour at 1:00pm will focus on the history, of which there is plenty. Each tour will also serve as an opportunity to discuss the construction currently underway, as well as to think about the tremendous potential to revitalize one of Los Angeles’s most important public spaces. For inspiration, see renderings of what Silver Lake Forward is proposing the reservoir could look like in the not-too-distant future!
