“THE HARIMAYA BRIDGE” OPENS
Written and directed by Aaron Woolfolk, this critically-acclaimed film stars Ben Guillory, Saki Takaoka, Misa Shimizu, and Danny Glover (who also executive produced it). It is a drama about an American man who must go to rural Japan after the sudden death of his estranged son there, and the secrets he discovers that his son left behind. The film had a nationwide theatrical release in Japan last year, and is now in limited release in U.S. movie theaters. Aside from the strong critical reviews the film has received in both the United States and Japan, there are a number of things that speak to THE HARIMAYA BRIDGE being a unique project. It is the first feature film made by an African American filmmaker in Japan. It is one of only a handful of films written and directed by a foreigner to be financed, produced, and distributed in the Japanese film industry. And it might be one of the only onscreen dramas that depict African American characters in East Asia.

LAVA Sunday Salon & Walking Tour
LAVA (Los Angeles Visionaries Association) welcomes interested individuals to gather on the third floor of the historic Clifton’s Cafeteria in Downtown Los Angeles (Noon-2pm) for a loosely structured conversational Salon featuring short presentations and opportunities to meet and connect with one another. If you’re interested in joining LAVA as a creative contributor or an attendee, Salon attendance is a great introduction to this growing community. LAVA member Gene Sculatti, outsider artist and pop culture critic (The Catalog of Cool) displays and discusses his fantastic cityscape scroll drawings Since the age of 9, Sculatti, 63, has created imaginary horizontal cities packed with fascinating details that reflect his evolving obsessions: googie signage, soaring bridges, skyscrapers, suburbs, amusement parks and much more. Join for a rare opportunity to get close to these beautiful and strange artworks and to hear the artist discuss his inspirations, working methods and how the scrolls have stayed with him for more than four decades. Following the Salon, Visionary Richard Schave will lead a downtown walking tour, “The Flâneur & The City.” The tour begins on the roof of the Los Angeles Athletic Club for a general overview of the forces at play within the Historic Core and a basic orientation to the geography of the neighborhood, followed by a stroll along Broadway and Spring Streets to discuss the finer points of the impact of recent public policy on urban renewal, gentrification and positive public space on the fragile ecologies of these two important thoroughfares. Explore a different side of downtown.

RESTAURANT.COM GIFT CERTIFICATES
Every few days this unique site does an amazing sale. Here’s how their site benefits over 5 million customers: find the restaurant you want to eat at and gift certificates of multiple denominations. Normally a $25 gift certificate that requires a minimum $35 purchase (+ 18% gratuity on the total bill) for 2 people sells for $10. Well, if they’re having an 80% off sale that voucher comes out to only $2! Spend $2 and get $25 off of your $35 check. This is totally legitimate and restaurants are usually quite appreciative for the new business.
