24TH ANNUAL NAMIC CONFERENCE AT DIVERSITY WEEK

Popular “CNN Newsroom” anchor Don Lemon is this morning’s moderator of The New Original, a panel about television programming diversity. This panel is part of the 24th Annual NAMIC Conference. In their 30th year, NAMIC is the National Association for Multiethnicity in Communications, an organization with over 2000 members in 18 chapters throughout the country. The well-attended conference is from September 14-15 at the Hilton New York in Manhattan, and is being presented as part of the communications industry’s newly reinstated Diversity Week.
Panelists include Matt Alvarez, Executive Producer of the original series, “Are We There Yet” and “Everybody Hates Chris,” Ice Cube, American rapper-actor-screenwriter-film director-producer, Loretha Jones, president, Original Programming, BET Networks, Geraldine Moriba, executive producer of CNN Worldwide’s “In America” production unit, and Ligiah Villalobos, writer-producer for “Go Diego Go.” The discussion will examine the importance of investing time and resources in the creation of multi-ethnic programming. It also analyzes the past, present and future of diversity in the television industry.
“Good Morning America” anchorwoman Juju Chang lead a fantastic discussion on “3D: Digital, Diversity, Demographics” that explored the impact that the 2010 Census will have on diversity initiatives. We got a sneak-peak at some of the key 2010 data amidst lively discussion about the implications of the changing consumer base for all dimensions of our industry: workforce, technology, programming, marketing and public policy. Panelists included diverse industry leaders including Univision Networks President Cesar Conde, Cox Communications President Patrick Esser, BET President & COO Scott Mills, and Travel Channel President Laureen Ong. UCLA Associate Professor of Urban Planning, School of Public Affairs Dr. Leobardo Estrada helmed the census aspects of the discussion.
“Fresh Prince of Bel Air” alum Tatyana Ali spoke about her successful webisode series “Buppies” that was picked up by BET and subsequent her new TV One show “Love That Girl!” Discussions include topics such as Digital Media, Diversity and Inclusion, Leadership Development and Multi-ethnic Content and Programming. Highlights were the Hispanic America 2010 forum and the presentation of the Excellence in Multi-cultural Marketing Awards. Special events include The L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program Luncheon sponsored by the Walter Kaitz Foundation and presented in partnership with Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award Luncheon, Breakfast Honoring the CableFAX “Most Influential Minorities in Cable”, the Diversity in Communications Career Expo and more.
Clearly, this conference is fantastic opportunity to learn from and interact with industry leaders from across the country.
