Filmmaker Kevin Smith became famous for his cult indie flicks “Clerks” and “Judging Amy.” He’s set to rip it on stage along with Ralph Garman at this comedy show. Should be a riot! Jay & Silent Bob may come out of the woodwork or maybe Smith will rant about seating problems on Southwest Airlines… Lots of food for thought.

Enjoy this first 1st Friday of the New Year on Venice’s main strip, Abbot Kinney Boulevard. It’s likely to be packed with food trucks, art shows, shop sales and restaurant deals. There are new rules – no parking on the Boulevard from 4-11pm – and yes, accept that parking will suck but nevertheless, this monthly event is usually quite worth trekking for. Sponsored by the Venice Chamber & Neighborhood Council, there are usually dozens of the best food trucks LA has to offer. This month’s highlight is the Bohemian Exchange Runway Fashion Show: Sita Couture’s Eco Spring Collection 2011 at 8:30pm with a refreshment and music reception following – it’s at 1358 Abbot Kinney Blvd. across from Abbot’s Habit. The rest of the action is all along Abbot Kinney!

“BRIAN GLOVER: FORTY YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY” OPENING
This exhibition is being held at a coffeehouse/gallery/performance space and includes an artist reception and special musical performance by Hubie Vine & Side Effect. Chicago native Brian Glover started drawing and painting at an early age and studied weekends at Chicago’s renowned Art Institute. In his teens, still photography became a calling for Brian, who counts such luminaries as Jacob Riis, Eugene Atget, Edward Weston and Walker Evans as influences. He studied photography at the Art Institute with such legendary names in the field as Gary Winogrand, and at Yosemite with Ansel Adams and Paul Caponigro. An adventurous soul, he backpacked his way around the continental United States making photographs and playing in chess tournaments, while earning his living as a portrait and commercial photographer. His personal work has been widely exhibited in galleries and photography shows. He then moved into the world of movie-making, joining the Cinematographer’s Guild in Chicago, and worked as a camera assistant on such notable films as ‘The Untouchables,’ ‘Home Alone,’ and ‘The Fugitive.’ Mr. Glover continued this work in Los Angeles, where he was honored for excellence by the International Cinematographer’s Guild. Still photography remains his enduring passion. Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hubie Vine & Side Effect provide musical entertainment.

Created as a studio/residency program in Beit Sahour, Bethlehem and recently re-established as the Decolonizing Architecture Institute (DAi), this project was initiated by Alessandro Petti, Sandi Hilal and Eyal Weizman in 2007. It engages spatial research and theory, and taking the conflict over Palestine as their main case study. Use spatial practice as a form of political intervention and narration. It’s a complex set of architectural problems centered around one of the most difficult dilemmas of political practice: how to act both critically within an environment in which the political force field, as complex as it may be, is so dramatically skewed. Very thought provoking.
