“THE BIG PAYBACK: THE HISTORY OF THE BUSINESS OF HIP-HOP” SIGNING WITH AUTHOR DAN CHARNAS
Journalist Dan Charnas discusses and signs his new book that takes us from the first $15 made by a “rapping DJ” in 1970s New York to the recent multi-million-dollar sales of the Phat Farm and Roc-a-Wear clothing companies in 2004 and 2007. On this four decade-long journey from the studios where the first rap records were made to the boardrooms where the big deals were done, The Big Payback tallies the list of who lost and who won. Read the secret histories of the early long-shot successes of Sugar Hill Records and Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC’s crossover breakthrough on MTV, the marketing of gangsta rap, and the rise of artist/ entrepreneurs like Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs. 300 industry veterans-well-known giants like Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, the founders of Def Jam; and key insiders like Gerald Levin, the embattled former Time Warner chief – gave their stories to renowned hip-hop journalist Dan Charnas, who provides a compelling, never-before seen, myth-debunking view into the victories, defeats, corporate clashes and street battles along the 40-year road to hip-hop’s dominance.

FOWLER OUTSPOKEN PANEL: SONIC NIGERIA
Nigeria is the heartland of West African music—Highlife, Jùjú, and Yoruba dance music are just a few of the popular styles that developed in the country. KCRW’s Tom Schnabel moderates a conversation with Viola Galloway of Amoeba Records, KPFK DJ Nnamdi Moweta, and DJ and music producer Ade James about the contemporary face of Nigerian music, its complex roots and international acclaim. CROSSING BORDERS FILM SERIES PRESENTS “EL MARIACHI” SCREENING
Catch Robert Rodriguez’s film debut shot in 1992 for pennies. See it as a double feature with “Children of Men.” Because they deal in the language of images, Mexican and Mexican-American directors continually cross, literally and figuratively, the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border to get their movies made, in the process transcending culture, language and nationality. These films show how two contemporary filmmakers use that ability to tell, in very different ways, stories of transnational existence and globalization. Both films will be shown in 35mm.

RESTAURANT.COM GIFT CERTIFICATES
Every few days this unique site does an amazing sale. Here’s how their site benefits over 5 million customers: find the restaurant you want to eat at and gift certificates of multiple denominations. Normally a $25 gift certificate that requires a minimum $35 purchase of food (+ 18% gratuity on the total bill) for 2 people sells for $10. Drinks are usually not covered. Well, if they’re having an 80% off sale that voucher comes out to only $2! Spend $2 and get $25 off of your $35 check. This is totally legitimate and restaurants are usually quite appreciative for the new business. And usually the servers are happy because they’re tipped 18% of the full value of the check. It’s a win win situation for all!
