SIERRA LEONE’S REFUGEE ALL STARS LIVE
After civil war forced them from their native Sierra Leone, the members of the Refugee All Stars came together in Guinea. Coming from humble beginnings in West African refugee camps, they’ve since toured worldwide performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. They have inspired fans with their uplifting songs of hope, faith and joy. The band is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact.
FREE Pre-Show Talk and Music in the Courtyard – Audience Participation Encouraged!
6:45pm – Stop by early to enjoy free music by Masanga and learn more about Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. Plus, it’s your chance to have fun and play one of the dozen’s of instruments that will be out in the courtyard.
Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars are one of the latest in a long line of musicians and groups that have used music as a tool for social change, political expression and cultural survival. Out of the ashes of a bloody civil war the group emerged as a voice of hope and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
This pre-show talk will examine Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars music and message and draw parallels with artists who have influenced them, including Fela Kuti, James Brown, and Bob Marley. From the West African griots to today’s rappers, we will explore how African music has spread over the past 500 years throughout the diaspora and then back again to Africa in this continual cycle of expression and innovation.
